Tragic Attack Claims Lives of Islamic Cleric and Worshippers in Birnin-Gwari, Nigeria

Early on Tuesday, October 24, a tragic incident unfolded in Ga Allah Babba village near Sabon Layi, situated in the Birnin-Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna state, Nigeria. During the morning prayers at a mosque, a group of bandits launched an attack that resulted in the unfortunate loss of lives, including an Islamic cleric and two other worshippers.

These assailants, who were reportedly returning from Zamfara State through the Kamuku forest near Kuriga village, unexpectedly came across Muslim faithful engaged in their morning devotions. Without hesitation, they sealed off the mosque and unleashed a barrage of gunfire on the congregants, resulting in the untimely deaths of the chief imam and two others.

This heart-wrenching incident occurred in Ga Allah Babba, a farming community in the western part of Birnin-Gwari, adjacent to the Kamuku National Park and the Kuyebana forest in Zamfara and Niger States. In the aftermath, two additional worshipers who suffered severe injuries were rushed to Jibrin Maigwari General Hospital in Birnin-Gwari for medical attention.

The Birnin-Gwari community has been grappling with incessant attacks by bandits, with tragic consequences such as killings and abductions, particularly among the local farmers. The situation has become increasingly distressing, particularly along the Birnin-Gwari-Kaduna highway, creating a state of fear and insecurity for travelers and other road users. Zubair Abdurrauf, a community leader, shared his concerns about the ongoing crisis.
